WAit wait- if I am the other poster you are referring to who changed the scenario, I object! I had an immediate vision of AUntyK that has never varied from the moment I read the description of her outfit. I never really thought she had kneesocks on that said, "Men Suck".
Whereas you decided the groom's family's reaction indicated that the outfit was far more offensive than the initial innocuous description indicated, I concluded that the groom's mother was over the top because the bride's family didn't seem unduly upset by AuntyK and had not even considered her anticipated appearance extreme enough to warrant warning the groom's family or even not inviting her. And where you concluded that the guests surprise meant something seriously wrong, I concluded that the guests were "surprised", not shocked or sickened or alarmed. Surprise to me is a mild kind of reaction that doesn't really interfere negatively with the proceedings and may have only been a brief noting of someone seriously "underdressed".
For me, this presented a scenario with options: we could as easily lay responsibility on others for their overly sensitive reactions, as condemn AuntyK for her different dress.
The focus, however, seemed to fall on blaming AuntyK, holding her responsible for any distress her dress causes, looking for the harm done, for malicious intent. Instead of considering that we all bear responsibility in these situations for making things pleasant by controlling our own reactions, I am accused of being determined to stick to my own assumptions. Which means what? Not accepting yours and Neo's? I interpreted the scene differently, but not necessarily wrongly. |
