I'm tired of hearing excuses for France not being able to deal with a heat wave.

Allow me to fill everyone in on the primary reason why people died in the heat waves across Europe. Amazingly, no one has mentioned it as a causal effect yet.

It's the high cost of energy!

I just got a bill for 1200 Euros for the month of August, because, I didn't want my family to fry. We searched and searched and finally found a home with air conditioning.

I'll bet if the French, or Italians, or Spaniards performed a study, they would find out the wealthy elderly did not die in the heat wave. It was the middle class and poor who couldn't afford to buy and run a damn air-conditioner when the temperature was frying grandma that did.

Constrast my experience here in Italy, with my experience in America, "the land of air conditioners". There, my wife and three children lived in a 3400 square foot home and never paid more than $125.00 a month for electricity. Here our home is barely 1400 square feet.

Moral of the story, high taxes kill.
