Head-Hunting

With regard to "Betting on Bernard"(Sept. 15, p. 50), Loral Chief Bernard Schwartz's legacy will speak for itself. As a private investor who has listened to dozens of Loral conference calls over the last five years, I was incredulous upon reading, "I don't feel guilty or sorrowful about anything we did--or didn't do." Aided by an ineffective board of directors, Schwartz talked a good game but never delivered. He bet the farm on risky adventures while promising shareholders he would never put the parent Loral in jeopardy. He destroyed his employees' retirement plans, bankrupted two companies in less than two years, collected an enormous salary and lost shareholders billions of dollars, all the while insisting that everything was going according to plan. The fact that he or any bankruptcy court actually believes he should still be in charge amazes me.
