I try to read the news carefully before I post, but sometimes I blow it. My earlier statements that characterized Powell's statements as setting a timeline, but not a deadline are in error.
"We would like to put a deadline on them," he said in an interview with editorial writers, editors and reporters for The Times, referring to the Iraqi task of writing a constitution. "They've got six months. It'll be a difficult deadline to meet, but we've got to get them going."

He later appeared to attempt to soften the deadline talk.
IN COMMENTS to reporters, Powell backed off using the word “deadline” which he was quoted as saying in a New York Times interview published Friday.
The United States wasn’t setting a deadline, Powell stressed, saying that would imply that if it wasn’t met there would be serious consequences.
“Six months seems to be a good timeline to put out there for the creation of this constitution, and also to give a sense of momentum and purpose to the effort of moving toward full restoration of authority over Iraq to the Iraqi people,” Powell told reporters.

So, apparently, he did say there should be a deadline, and then "kinda" retracted, and said timeline.
One needs a time stamp on all utterances from this Admin.
