Carl, the advice to Saddam, pre-Kuwait invasion, wasn't just a little mistake. It was a biggie, equivalent to Australia saying to the USA "What do you think of us taking over NZ by invasion and conquest?" The local ambassador wouldn't just make up some answer on the spot. That one would go high up the chain of command.

The answer would come back that it was a good idea, and in that instance the USA might even do the honours [that would teach the anti-noocular commies in Helengrad who's boss of the world].

Actually, it was a much bigger mistake than that. It pretty much led directly to a decade of conflict, horror and high oil prices [which some in the oil industry will be very, very grateful for as it kept, for example, North Se and North Slope oil very profitable]. I don't believe it was just an ooops.

I think it was a booby-trap and Saddam walked in and his oil was taken off the market while the search for BigFoot got underway. Or, the USA is so impossibly hopeless that they should NOT be in charge of weapons of mass destruction and the noocular button with religious cranks in charge.
