My take on the Alhambra is that one can compare it to Saddam's "WMDs". Sound and Fury but no substance. The Alhambra was the last of the Moslem rulers' attempts to maintain control without the necessary military power to enforce it. As to the tolerance or lack of the same of the rulers of the time, my guess is that if one didn't rock the boat then one didn't get squashed.
