Both parties have such, John, and we should be thankful. It increasingly looks as if we are going into ideological binarism at the national level, which cannot be helpful for simply getting things done. The House seems to be a lost cause but the senate can still muster enough votes to, at least on occasion, pass something.

But I don't think the Reps keep Specter around, and give him fairly strong positions on committees, out of fair mindedness (nor would the Dems), but because, finally, when all else is done, they need his vote to organize the Senate. And they fear that someone further right could not win Pa.
