Hi all; Security "incidents" in Iraq sets new record at 49 in UN's latest security update:

ISM 24 – 25 /09 security Update
General: The general trends are for an increase of attacks against C.F. along the Iraq/ Syria border, an increase of attacks against Iraqi Police and, an increase in the number of IED born ambushes followed by RPG/ small arms fire . There was a surge of attacks against C.F. and C.F. operations in the Central region mainly in Mosul and, along the HWY1. Further terror attacks against Iraqi civilian have been reported.

Baghdad and surrounding regions including the Western Desert: The Region is still experiencing the higher number of attacks against the C.F. with an increasing number of mortar attacks against C.F. base camps. The reported security incidents are still mainly concentrated on the axe Ramadi – Fallujah – Abu Ghuryas – Ba 'aquab – Qatum – Muqdadiyah.

Two other hot spots: one in the north Taji, one in the south: the belt around Mahamudia, Karbala, Hilla and Haswa. The security incidents reported in Baghdad are mainly on the west bank of the Tigris River, around the BIAP and more especially in the North-west of the BIAP. Use of large IED, in day light, has become one of the main dangers for staff travelling in Baghdad. In a recent attack against a C.F. vehicle, an IED was detonated in the close proximity of two Iraqi civilian buses making one death and several wounded among the bystanders and buses passengers. The time bomb attack against an hotel, were the crew of a press agency was accommodate, has taken place in a neighbourhood of zone 10, and were a potential treat against IO/INGO/DM was reported possible. This attack, apparently directed at the press crew, is a remind that anti-C.F. armed groups with a terrorist agenda will not hesitate to target low profile, and Iraqi civilian objectives. In this logic, Hotels were international staff are accommodate constitute ideal soft targets with very little, if any, relevant security system to overcome.

Northern Region (Erbil): No any security incident was reported.

Central Region (Mosul): The lull observed in the reported number of attacks against C.F. seems to have ended with the resumption of a high tempo of attacks against C.F. and Iraqi Police. By night, two IED born ambushes, followed by RPGs and small arms fire occurred in the region close of the Syrian border. The high level of coordination show by the attackers and, the fact that the attackers proceeded without any illumination of the battle field, suggest a high level of preparedness and training and, the possibly that the assailant were using passive night vision systems. C.F. are reported maintaining a strong pressure on the anti-C.F. groups trough C.P./ raids / search and destroy operations, Iraqi Civilian have been reported turning in weapons and indicating caches. Two individual threatened to kill the chief of the Iraqi Police if he does not resign from his duty. Several rounds of small arms have been fired at his house, apparently “only” to intimidate him.

Upper South Region (Hilla): No any security incidents have been reported.

Lower South region (Basrah)/Kuwait border: Several IED have been found in the city. There is a worrying surge of criminality in the all Region and three on U.N. trucks shipping goods on behalf of a UN Agency have been hijacked. Two of the hydrivers have been abducted by the bandits on the road between Safwan and Nasiriya.
