The main reason why Japan and Germany may remilitarize, is our bad example. We are doing, what we taught them not to do, and so they are in danger of forgetting the lessons of the 20th Century. The world will not be a better place, if Japan and Germany and China and India, and then Nigeria and Brazil, and then everyone including your next-door neighbor, all have nuclear weapons, a Global Reach military, and a doctrine of preventive war (=First Strike = wars of aggression). Germany should copy the good example of the Swiss, not the bad American example.

Jacob, I never said the world would be a better place if all these nations had nuclear weapons. Wherever you got such a notion to argue against is anybodies guess.

My point was simply that Germany should determine it's own destiny and pay for its own defense needs. It's a mature democracy and the German people should be free to chart their own future. The notion that we can all be Switzerland and ignore the lessons of history is a ridiculous one. Would Switzerland be around today if America hadn't destroyed the armies of Hitler? Do you really believe Hitler would have ignored the wealth of Switzerland forever?
