Unless China nukes Taiwan, the Taiwanese have enough advanced US arms to sink most of the Chinese navy before they get halfway across the straits.

And a military offensive would have grave implications for the trade relationship, no doubt about it. No way the US could sit by and watch a new war erupt in East Asia and not act. Too much at stake to let the region slip into that kind of anarchy.

As usual, naked self-interest would prevail. My guess is Beijing will make plans to buy Taiwan sometime down the line, fair and square. They are already accumulating enough US Treasury bonds to make a nice down payment.
