A New Twist
What athletic event is a combination of bodybuilding, Miss World, Mr. Universe and gymnastics? That's right, the World Yoga Championship! Organizers of the championship, a first for the United States, hope to challenge the idea that competition is anathema to the ancient spiritual discipline of yoga, and lay the groundwork for yoga to become an Olympic event. "There have been yoga championships in India for hundreds of years," said championship organizer and "hot yoga" guru Bikram Choudhury. Experts from India will judge approximately 70 yogis and yoginis on grace, proportion, flexibility, endurance and balance during five compulsory and two optional poses. Competition, Choudhury said, "serves the higher purpose of inspiring people to take up the health-promoting practice of yoga."
