Hi Mark,
I don't think I can shed much light on any of your Newbridge questions. I would doubt they are developing their own transciever chips, and I would expect them to be line-code agnostic (whatever works and meets customer requirements). They have an affiliate which has been doing DMT-related stuff for the broadcast/cable industry for a couple of years already (West End), so this may not as big a stretch as it might seem at first blush.
I also expect that they will have as much (maybe more) interest in other xDSL flavors, certainly including HDSL, where they must be OEMing (or at least integrating) other people's equipment with theirs today. And I doubt they will produce consumer equipment, unless the business model which takes hold is one in which the telco buys everything and "rents" the CPE. As you may recall, I doubt that business model works for very long.
I appreciate your NIH comment-I don't know where I come out on it. This is complex stuff, and there is going to be a great advantage in one vendor providing an end-to-end solution. That's clearly what Alcatel and Cisco are pursuing, but that doesn't make it the only way to go. Time will tell, I guess.
Final question-how come I got left off the list of 100? Just another club that won't have me, I guess.
Have a great weekend! |
