The protesters know that the US is a democracy and is sensitive to public opinion.

Yes, but more of the public opinion of the Americans, rather than someone on Crete.

You don't think our gov't is sensitive to criticism outside the US? I think its very sensitive.

One thing about these protesters is that the US media generally shows a very sanitized view of them, one where the cookiness and naivity of the vast majority doesn't get shown.

How do you know? Did you attend the protests in NYC? The ones I saw here in the NW, there were kooks but most were 'normal people'. I use the term 'normal' loosely. <g>

You'll have to be more specific; the quotes and opinions range from reasonable to radical.

Yes, something like "Oppose a plan to dispatch S. Korean combat troops to Iraq" is a reasonable opinion. What caught my attention was the last quote: "I don't believe British and American troops should still be in Iraq. Everyday you hear stories of innocent people being killed — that's not justice." I really wander about the thinking (if any) of someone like this.

Last fall, there were many people opposed to the war. There were many people who wanted the UN to lead the charge. Why are you surprised that their opinions have not changed? Many people still consider this an immoral war.

Naturally, all of those people would be present at an anti war rally.

There is an election in two years. You may be right but I think the Labour party is like all political parties; they'll can a known vote getter only when they're sure he can't win anymore.......don't you think?

I would generally agree. There is a slight complication in UK, in that they have a 3rd party (which I could never figure out). In absence of the 3rd party, Blair represents the left of center party, the opposition is right of center party. The ones dissatisfied are the ones to the left of Blair (where are they going to go?), which probably makes him more attractive to the center, so I think the situation is a little different than that with Thatcher.

The third party is the Liberal Democrats and I think they are left of the Labour party. They are stealing votes and seats from the Labour party. Maybe the MPs from the Labour party plan to jump ship and join the Liberal Democrats.

In any case, its surprising to me how much they dislike Blair. At some point, did the Tories hate M. Thatcher in the same way?
