Ted,

How do you know? Did you attend the protests in NYC? The ones I saw here in the NW, there were kooks but most were 'normal people'. I use the term 'normal' loosely. <g>

When you have big protest, you are bound to have more normal people, but small protests, such as those you described, are generally attended by the "professional protesters" = mostly kooks. That's my experience in NYC.

Last fall, there were many people opposed to the war. There were many people who wanted the UN to lead the charge. Why are you surprised that their opinions have not changed? Many people still consider this an immoral war.

The war is over. The only thing to decide is whether to "win the peace" and help Iraq on the way to a more representative government, or whether we abandon them to Saddamists or Islamists.

I want success - representative government in Iraq, with less violence, more prosperity, US departure because we are no longer needed.

What the complainers want is unclear to me. I can't help but wonder if they really want a failure - US departs, but Iraq is left to Saddamists, Islamists, torturers. Despotism and misery.

The third party is the Liberal Democrats and I think they are left of the Labour party.

Is that the case? I was under the impression that they were more in the middle, or all over the place. Labor used to be hopelessly left wing, until Blair brought them from the wilderness, closer to the center. Now with Blair, it is possible that the Liberal Democrats are actually to the left of Labor.

In any case, its surprising to me how much they dislike Blair.

Maybe I should read a bit more of British press.

At some point, did the Tories hate M. Thatcher in the same way?

It was the left wing of the Tories that wanted to replace her, but their uprising failed. But after serving 3 terms, or even more, Thatcher realized that it was time for her to move on, and handpicked a successor - John Major, who took over, I believe in the middle of the term, won 1 election, and later he lost to Blair, IIRC.
