I believe during that period the Northern states wanted to or did, impose taxes on either the export of cotton, or the import of textiles, which was detrimental to the South's interest and beneficial to the North's. The slave issue was the moral imperative to justify going to war and for morale. I imagine historians of the future will probably ignore the U.S. oil interest in Iraq, or the WMD's and justify the war on humanitarian concerns. Always good to view one's country in a favorable light.
