Semiconductors . . . IBM's created a less power consumptive new chip design which will quadruple the performance of wireless devices could have implications for IBIS. Analysts are hearing market chatter related to this morning's announcement suggesting this development as a positive for IBIS given its strategic pact with IBM to develop its SOI wafers could have implications for IBIS.

Boxmakers . . . Recent Hewlett-Packard checks indicate a sense of cautious optimism internally that execution is improving, and demand trends are stable to slightly better in the aggregate. The data points give us an extremely high confidence level in our October quarter estimates. Consumer spending appears solid for back-to-school; enterprise remains mixed with US improving and Europe perhaps still weakening a little on a seasonally-adjusted basis. The perception of greater internal pressure at HP to meet targets was confirmed. Management believes it is more on top of component cost forecasting this quarter and has made some longer term purchase agreements to meet demand for back-to-school and Christmas. Printer hardware pricing appears to be declining overall at a normal 10-15% rate; it has not intensified sequentially. IBM seems to be driving hard in the Intel-server space, being very aggressive on pricing and pushing for share. Outsourcing activity remains high and pricing apparently rational. Consulting is weak but stable and support seems slightly better.
