Samsung, KTF Eye Iraqi Cell Phone Project

Samsung Electronics, the largest handset producer in the country and KTF, a mobile service provider, are likely to participate in Qualcomm-led mobile communication projects in Iraq. Qualcomm, based in the United States, holds the rights to core CDMA mobile technology.
The Ministry of Information and Communication (MOIC) said Wednesday that the two Korean firms are likely to participate in the restoration projects for Iraq's new telecommunications network.

Sources said that the U.S. mobile service developer has submitted a bid for the Iraqi mobile telecommunications service projects through a consortium that the firm formed with the Korean companies. Samsung and KTF are considered to be the best firms in the world at commercializing CDMA technology.

Sources, however, said that Iraq has not decided whether to use CDMA and GSM standards. GSM is the dominant method in Europe.

If the Qualcomm-led consortium wins the Iraqi project, Samsung Electronics is likely to supply various CDMA equipment and KTF to provide CDMA network design and operation services, sources said.
