I think impeachment may be more a result of this trend then a cause of it. Of course even as a result of the trend it can also serve to strengthen it

Impeachment was also a matter of principle for a number of those involved but it wouldn't have happened with out the partisans jumping on board with the principled.

As for the recall there seems to be less principle behind it but also it doesn't seem like something that would be quite as bad absent principle.
