Clinton does not run the Dem party. Not even close. He is very powerful though. Clinton's main strength is his ability to get out the black vote and remind people of economic success. The good ole days before Bush.

Other than that, he's influential but out of power and unable to run again. The GOP always exaggerates Clinton's power. They're trying to stop anyone else from leading the Dems to victory so they minimize everyone but CLinton.
Kerry is the likely new leader of the Dems, along with people like Feinstein, Ford, Biden, etc.

You have to stop reading RNC type websites for your news. As an active Democrat, I can tell you Clinton's name rarely comes up and not that many people even think about him or what he's for. AFL-CIO is more powerful that Clinton in their ability to get someone nominated. But no single power rules in the Dem race.

Kerry is already backed by many of the top Dem moderates. He doesn't need Clinton's backing. CLinton just wants a southerner on the ticket. And he's right. We all agree on that.
