Nortel Inks Equipment Deals
By Susan Rush
September 30, 2003

It has been a busy week for Nortel Networks, and it is only Tuesday. Yesterday, the equipment supplier unveiled an EV-DO deal with Verizon Wireless, and today the company announced contract wins for two more GSM networks.

Looking to enhance the roaming capability of its wireless customers in Guatemala, Sercom has turned to Nortel to assist it in deploying a nationwide GSM network, which also will be EDGE and GPRS ready. Nortel was an obvious choice for Sercom because its CDMA2000 1X network is based on Nortel's wireless equipment, making it easy for Sercom to manage both networks seamlessly. The new GSM gear is designed to help the operator increase its current voice capacity and facilitate regional and international roaming.

Nortel's GSM solution will be used to overlay Sercom's existing CDMA2000 1X network.

The Central America/Latin America region has been a hotbed of business for Nortel over the past couple of years. Since 2002, the company has closed 12 deals in the region valued at more than $250 million.

Separately, Chunghwa Telecom will fork over $64 million for Nortel equipment to expand its GSM network in Taiwan.

The carrier has called on Nortel to deliver radio, core switching and intelligent network equipment to support GSM/GPRS wireless voice and data services. The goal of the upgraded network is to make it 2G/3G internetworking-ready, improve radio frequency and open the door for new revenue-generating services such as personalized ringtones and prepaid short message service. Last year, Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications awarded a 3G W-CDMA license to Chunghwa Telecom.

The companies have a long-standing relationship. Nortel built Chunghwa Telecom's first GSM network in the mid-1990s. Today's expanded contract deal is an extension of contracts signed between the two companies in June and August.
