It's not scary if we do it once in a while. It is scary if it becomes a trend and an official doesn't know whether he will have his full term to implement his campaign promises or not.

As for resigning I think most politicians wouldn't resign unless they are indicted or face impeachment.

But that's a side effect of what we're talking about. People resign when those in their own party tell them they were way out of line. That doesn't happen anymore because everything has been so partisan--whatever the other guys do is impeachable and what our guys do they either didn't do or it's ok to do it. I've read some of the discussion on this CIA leak issue and it's just shocking to see people who don't mind if their own guys did something terrible.

We ought to have a common sense of what is beyond the pale and reject it no matter who does it. And conversely we should let people who are doing legitimate things that we don't agree with keep doing them until the next election when we can throw the bums out with due deliberation.
