Bear with me now, Madly. What does the list of initials on the far
left represent? Are those brokers' initials, or the people who are
actually seeking to buy or sell the shares? I can understand why
each broker would have both a bid and an ask, but a person (like me,
for example) would be either selling OR buying, but not both.

Those are the acronyms that represent the Market Makers' houses.
Those are the prices at which they are willing to buy and sell.
The MMs represent your brokers. The MM's MAKE THE MARKET in your
stocks and your brokers give your orders to them.

I am happy to answer as much I can, but I must tell you that I am
simplifiying the process.

It's very interesting and helpful to watch the MM's. Sometimes
you have a relentless seller and there is only ONE MM on the
ASK--the seller. So all of a sudden the stock finally ticks up
and I look at the MM line up and I see that very MM has disappeared.
Good news! Then the stock rises. And when I see the old seller
come back, I might get ready to sell. See how that works?
Information is great.
