sheesh, I can't believe the distortion on this visa issue.

Silicon Valley was where the majority of the visa holders would up in the 90s. Until 1998 the visa cap was 65K- then it was upped to 195K until this year. Now it is back to 65K.

What this article doesn't point out is that the number of jobs in SV is down to 1996 levels!!!

There is no reason that local firms cannot make it with 1996 visa levels considering we have 1996 employment levels now. And I am not even counting the L1 situation which is a huge boondoggle in and of itself.

My personal view, is that offshoring of jobs will be much more difficult without the free flowing visa workforce who are able to float from country to country. Companies can still offshore projects and that is fine. And we still have an H1-B program for companies that want to sponsor workers who want to come here and stay here. But this migrating to and fro is not beneficial to the US as a whole. It helps a few CEOs at the top but sucks IP and tax revenue from the US. Plus the overall climate is not good for the workers, they are taken advantage of in many cases.

As the economy recovers, industry executives envision an even more acute shortage of skilled workers. "If there are no visas to bring talent to the U.S.," Badiga of Wipro said, "American companies will eventually say, 'Let's go to India, where the resources are.' "

Yeah riiiight.
