"Israel can't force the Palestinians to be reasonable, to pursue their interests and not their passions, but it can create a context where they are more likely to do so than not Um, didn't they try that? wasn't it read as weakness? didn't it lead to the current intifada? Tom Friedman loves to talk as if it were low-risk for Israel to try such ideas, because they're "strong". If you open your arms to someone and he hits you in the face, of course you're not going to stand so close the next time. Why doesn't Tom at least wait until the "terrorist bum" is no longer running the show for the Palestinians, before making these suggestions?
