It's just a number that has been stuck in the back of my mind for a while - that in recent years Saddam's regime has been killing about 2k people/year with a substantially larger number of mutilations. (I would guess 4 to 5 times the number of executions).

Hm. Sorry but I am always a little suspicious of that kind of folklore. There should be some credible source that has compiled statistics to be able to say "2,000 killed per year", unless it is just another "story".

If you ever do find a source with statistics, I would be interested to hear about it.
