I hate to say this but it seems that the only option left to ORCL is very competitive pricing. That is where the states and Justice want this battle to end. They want more competitive prices fighting for market share. This type of scenario will not be good for software as a whole and will result in a consolidation when those not able to make margins will be forced out of business. After that has happened, those that survive will quickly make up lost ground. Because Larry could not make this deal work, this is where we now stand. If the deal had worked, then both PSFT and ORCL shareholders would have been the big winners and since many funds and many individuals own both, there will be fallout at both organizations. Larry would have to step down and find a back room so that ORCL could quickly repair their image and get the lion’s share of all the pent up business that has been waiting for the results of this merger. PSFT management may not fare any better when shareholder realize that the alternative to the merger will be an old fashion price war to the death. Who knows, this realization may bring both sides to the table, but then is it too late? I don't think so. Justice would have a hard time dealing with a case against this merger is both sides were willing to see it consummated.
