Some of my personal knowledge of 56Kbps technology:
1. x2 beat K56flex to the punch and hence had an early penetration into AOL and others
2. Most of the x2 accounts were and still are also ASND (and K56flex)ones
3. Once the K56flex camp caught up which has just occured there are really no incentives any more for ISP's to go with x2 for the following reasons:
a. Most of the networking and computer (client access!) vendors elected to support k56flex
b. When purchasing k56flex modem products - the consortium has floated guarantees (although I've not personally seen one) that "upgrade to the emerging standard will be a software only one". I've not seen any such statements from the x2 camp, although the PSINet announcement alludes to it:
``The flexibility of the Total Control platform enables evolution from 3Com's ground-breaking x2 Technology to the ensuing modem standards that will move this industry forward,'' said William L. Schrader, PSINet's chairman, president, chief executive officer, and founder. ``PSINet is pleased to join 3Com in its commitment to standards-based solutions for our customers and in its leadership in providing a solid, open path for progress,'' Schrader added. 3Com complements the enabling features of the Total Control access connector with a guaranteed upgrade to the 56 kilobit modem standards now expected in early 1998"
4. Overall this battle will be moot within six months when the standards activity converges (as a matter of fact - reading the PSInet announcement you can see that port density was more important than 56Kbps format) - but because of ASND's bigger market presence in POP's (Points of Presence= the ISP interface to customers) and ISP NAP's (Network Access Points = network meeting points of POP's)and the larger vendor support - my vote is that K56flex will reign in the short term.
