The Vancouver Sun reports in its Thursday edition that if everything goes as planned, accused money-launderers Jack Purdy and Ronaldo Horvat will be free to return to Vancouver by the end of the week. The Sun's David Baines writes, on Page F16, that Mr. Purdy's lawyer, Neil Sonnett, says the pair have agreed to plead guilty to a financial reporting offence, far less serious than money-laundering, which could have netted them six to 10 years. Under terms of the proposed deal, the two would be sentenced to time served, which in Mr. Purdy's case is the two months he spent in jail last year before being released on bail. A Miami judge will be asked to ratify the proposal Oct. 2, and if approved, Mr. Purdy and Mr. Horvat will be free to return to Vancouver. Mr. Sonnett said Mr. Purdy was "looking forward to the fight" but opted instead for the more conservative option. The two, along with three other B.C. men -- Harold Joliffe, Kevan Garner and Martin Chambers -- were drawn into an FBI-RCMP money-laundering and stock sting operation in August, 2002. The pair pleaded not guilty and placed on bail. Mr. Purdy was confined to Miami while Mr. Horvat was placed under house arrest in Gig Harbor, Wash.
