Southern starts new 630-MW Fla. power plant
Reuters, 10.02.03, 2:24 PM ET

NEW YORK, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Southern Co. Inc. (nyse: SO - news - people) said Thursday it has begun commercial operation from the Stanton A natural gas-fired power plant near Orlando, Florida, with a generation capacity of 630 megawatts.

Southern's share of electricity from the plant will be purchased by its development partners in the project, which are Orlando Utilities Commission, Florida Municipal Power Agency and Kissimmee Utility Authority, Southern said in a statement.

Commercial operation of Stanton A brings Southern's wholesale generating capacity in the Southeast region to about 5,000 MW, the company said.

A company spokesman declined to disclose the cost of the project.

Southern said it has other generation stations under construction through the Southeast which will bring its wholesale generation capacity in the region to 6,000 MW by mid-2005.

One megawatt of electricity is roughly enough to power 1,000 homes.
