Triple Witching: 3rd Friday of September, and other comments

Once every quarter on the third Friday of March, June, September and December - stock options, stock index options and stock index futures all expire at the same time. this can throw the markets into turmoil as traders scramble to offset buy and sell orders. I usually enter those weeks out of the market so as to take advantage of climbs and bounces. Start watching the short interest on your stocks and post anything that looks to be a candidate.

On another note, last week I tweaked the net a bit to attempt to correct for some indicator drift. As a result, my posts have had either big ups or big downs. I will try to figure out that one this weekend and correct. I will also be moving the picks to a longer hold time frame (6-8 week). This time of the year we are pretty much out of the big drops and large second wave bounces and moving toward momentum gains as the Christmas buildup occurs. With low probablility of interst rate increases for the next few months, stocks that in in upward motion will tend to stay that way longer.

On a third note, if someone knows of companies that are doing something spectacular for the holiday season (new form of cabbage-head kid, beanie-dog or mind-numbing electronic game), let us know so we can watch to see if any of the funds are buying in for the fourth quarter profits.

Lastly, the Labor Day holiday effect is approaching, and its gains are second only to the two days preceeding New Years. I will post that data later, but suffice to say that the date TWO days before the holiday (the Wednesday) is substantially more profitable than the day before. I will also post a long-term-hold list for saner 'investor' types who actually make the most from this effect.

Have a safe weekend all
