Grey Davis is not corrupt, at least any more than any other politician out there. His fundraising is aggresive but not more so than any other major politician. For instance, look at GW's fundraising as governor of Texas. He was Davis x 10 in terms of questionable contributions and favors done.

On deficits, Bush is 40 tiems as bad as Davis, and the energy ripoffs accounted for half the deficit, so subtract that and Davis is no worse than the GOP Texas governor. California also had a much bigger high-tech business than any other state so the dot-bombs really hurt revenues.

Davis has never been charged with any crimes or misdemeanors. He's a wonk and a public servant. He's also not a liberal. He's a moderate. He hasn't gotten rich off the job. He won a Bronze Star in Vietnam. He knows service.

As for taxes, Reagan raised them, and even the car tax is just the same as when Pete Wilson was in office. In fact the bill which lowered the car tax specifically stated that it was to be raised if the state ran into financial trouble.

Davis lacks charisma, is stiff and is slow to defend himself. He also doesn't have outward fire in his belly. Those I find faults, not crimes or moral weaknesses.

If I had been Davis I'd have unmasked those Enron bandits a long time ago and made sure everyone knew about it. I'd also have gone on the attack a long time ago against the forces behind the recall. Davis is a fighter, but in a meekish kind of way. But maybe his style works. He may yet win. Don't under-estimate him. He's not nearly as inept as the GOP has tried to portray him. In fact, for years he presided over the best economy this state has ever had.
