As long as we know what form of manipulative is being used- I often think of the noun form, "a manipulative"- for example, a small colored piece of plastic one uses to teach math to small children. I don't think there is any insincerity involved there- although I guess there might be insincere math teachers, who teach math even though they really don' believe it... Will have to think about that.
