Another aspect not yet discussed is the view that children are the property of their parents, to be handed back and forth as though they were a pitcher of milk.

I think this is what bothered me the most about the scenario. I was reminded of the do-not-call list and how nutty it is for telemarketers to fight for the right to call people who will just hang up on them. And I'm wondering about a father who would insist on taking a kid out of her home for a month to be with him when the kid was going to hate every minute of it and end up hating him for it. I know that some people maintain two homes, one for winter and one for summer, and they furnish both and they cart the stuff they can't duplicate back and forth. I wouldn't want to live like that, particularly as a kid who just wants to be with her friends, anyway. It struck me as just awful.

I can make a strong argument for a law that provided that if there is no physical abuse in the marriage, a couple with children may not get divorced until the last child has become emancipated.

I prefer my approach--people who aren't qualified to raise kids shouldn't produce them. The first qualification is to be an adult.
