In its most provocative sentence, the article said, "A senior administration official said that before Novak's column ran, two top White House officials called at least six Washington journalists and disclosed the identity and occupation of Wilson's wife."

No other news organization has managed to confirm that statement.

You say you are beginning to conclude the six journalists called bit is not true. I must say the two paragraphs you clipped and I've clipped above, give me pause.

But on Wednesday, I think, Nora O'Donnell of NBC news told Chris Mathews that all the press core knew who the White House officials were. And who the journalists contacted were. So Mathews asked her why doesn't someone name them. She smiled. He smiled. Interview over.

So, it is much like other such, in that the first mystery is compounded by subsequent mysteries. But by now every one involved has lawyered up. That's another part of the pattern.

After reading the Hagel quote in Josh Marshall's column yesterday, I've concluded it's not only Scooter Libby but Cheney as well since it's reasonable to assume Libby wouldn't do anything like this without Cheney's approval. If that's true, the Bush WH has very few degrees of freedom.
