We are not ignoring Al Qaida. We kill or capture members of the group all the time, whether in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Europe, or the United States. We, in conjunction with our allies, have foiled many plots in the past couple of years. But more than that, Al Qaida is coming to us, in Iraq. Better there than here.
It is a financial drain only if you do not believe it is an integral part of solving the issues of terror and proliferation. Otherwise, we are getting a pretty good bang for our buck. It has, at a minimum, made us more credible when dealing diplomatically with dubious regimes.
Because Saddam supported terrorists, and had some links, though not yet clear, to Al Qaida itself.
The ultimate danger was that we would tire of containment, go away, and have Saddam or one of his sons continue or resume the WMD programs until able to dominate the region, and become really threatening outside of it.
Of course all of this helps to improve the armed forces.
Of course we need to strengthen the military budget. We are practically the only country that is capable of leading the war against terror......... |
