As you say, there's no citation of findings. It was a political conference.
The statement that "The Russian scientists stick together" itself would seem to reflect little respect for their scientific integrity; and the fact that Russian scientists march in step with government positions is hardly headline news.
The Russian spokesman cited appears on the surface of it to be taking the position that global warming is not even occurring. This is an extreme minority opinion in the scientific community. Even those few scientists who oppose Kyoto-type responses almost uniformly concede that global warming is taking place. The questions for them, I'd say, are how much of the phenomenon is "anthropogenic"; and what are the risk/reward, cost/benefit assessments; and how should a responsible polity respond?
I suspect if you are hoping that the "coffin" is "shut" on global warming, as opposed to on Kyoto, you are going to be disappointed, but then I'm not a climatologist.
Did you comment, btw, on whether you find the destruction of the rainforests worrisome? It's not the same subject, I know, but it's kind of related, and I'm curious to know how a person who doubts the existence of global warming, (at least doubts that human activity is significantly involved; I'm not really familiar with your position) feels about rain forest and species destruction. |
