I think hypotheticals are unquestionably good things when they are inside one's head. I think they become less good when discussed with other people- especially when people become emotionally invested in the hypothetical. I think you can imagine how many hypos I discussed in law school- both in class and out of class. And real life events rarely induce the kind of emotional frenzy that a hypo will create- so I cannot say that hypos are really good things when they are going on interpersonally, unless you are in a room with people who are curious, but without rancor towards opinions (and the people who hold those opinions)that might be totally divergent from their own. In the cases where hypo discussions escalate to shouting matches, I cannot say I see the discussion as anything but an evil, that degrades discussion, and the people in the discussion.
