Samsung-Sony Deal Causes NAND Shortages

Reports indicate that a deal struck between Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Japan's Sony Corp. could exacerbate the price hikes and shortages in the NAND-based memory market.

According to Susquehanna Financial Group semiconductor analyst Tai Nguyen, channel checks reveal that contract pricing for NAND-based flash memory is expected to jump 5 percent in October over September. "We continue to see strong demand for NAND flash memory in the market, while we see no improvement on the supply front," Nguyen said.

Shortages are also prevalent in the marketplace. Nguyen said that shortages were likely to go unabated because of supply agreement he believes was reached between Sony and Samsung over the summer. Sony's chief executive officer Nobuyuki Idei made several trips to Samsung facilities in Korea during the summer resulting in the agreement for Samsung to supply NAND flash memory chips through 2004.

"The implication of this development is that Samsung's top priorities are supplying Sony, Nokia Lexar and SanDisk with NAND flash memory, and that other companies without long term supply agreements may be at a disadvantage," Nguyen said
