If I can add my 2›.

I think that between the extremes of a technology "jihad" on the one hand and not caring about the technology, just show me the money on the other, I think there can be a very profitable middle ground.

You are right when you imply that being in love with a stock & company because one think's the technology is sexy is unwise. However, if one really were able to understand the technology well enough to see clearly the advantages that will propel it into a position of dominance in the industry, then one has an advantage over other investors who do not (all other things being equal).

Your point that investors can continue to make money on the current market winner and switch to the technology leader when the technology advantage is more widely agreed upon, can also work well, it's just a different style of investing. If you wait until it's clear that CDMA is dominant, there will be less headroom in the stock because it's already run up as the market discovered the stock. Some investors prefer to leverage their technical expertise and bet early for maximum gain. Of course, this is riskier.

Both styles can make good money. I use both myself.
