Very, very interesting question.

I'm not sure the religion part works, though maybe it does. I suspect it's more that blacks have been victims of discrimination in the past, so we need to be sensitive to their needs not to be further victimized, while the male doctors and nurses who will be excluded from the birthing room have not been traditional victims of discrimination, so don't need protection.

If it were, say, a prostate operation and the man asked that no female doctors or nurses be allowed to be in the operating room, I'm not sure the hospital would be so eager to comply with the request. Are you?
