California has a hugely expensive university system to maintain for one thing so taxes are always going to be higher here than South Dakota. I don't think anybody is advocating closing the University of California. If some small business can't make it and is looking for Nevada tax rates like where James Bowers lives they should probably move because we are never going to get there. The reason you start a business in CA is because you want to access the money that Cisco and Oracle created in the North and the film industry, Disney etc. created in the south, it isn't because its cheap here, just the fact that wealth exists here means it will be more expensive by default, no?

As far as uninsured people, California like all states tries to collect from people that can afford to pay but this process in itself is hugely expensive. We have to decide as a nation if we want to continue providing emergency care for everybody who walks through the door. Personally I think all these contract manufacturers that these high tech companies use should have to pay for health insurance, dumping that cost on the taxpayer is not acceptable. Lots of companies engage in this sleazy business practice of hiring "contract firms" to do their dirty work while undercutting wages and paying no benefits. I think Tyson Chicken is the worst in the country. Not that I care immensely about labor practices overall, as long as they are legal but dumping healthcare costs onto taxpayers is not ok imho.
