What time frame are you talking about here? Year of purchase and value at the present time would be of relevance, seems to me.

If they hadn't bought at the absolute bottom, wouldn't they still be pretty rich today if still holding the property?

I personally am not impressed with people who bought at a bottom a long time ago. I'd much more like to know where people wound up who bought at ANY time and held for a considerable amount of time. There's a difference, if one is trying to measure an average amount of success in the real estate market.

One can ALWAYS find an example of spectacular success, but average success is more interesting and relevant to the average person.
