SEOUL, Oct 7 Asia Pulse - Shipments of South Korea's four major export items rose in September by over 30 per cent each on a monthly basis for the first time this year, according to the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy Tuesday. Semiconductor exports increased 32.8 per cent in September from the same month a year ago, with wireless telecommunication devices rising 37.7 per cent to US$1.78 billion.
Shipments of cars rose 41 per cent year-on-year to US$1.69 billion, while computer exports rose 33.7 per cent, according to ministry officials. Computer monitor shipments jumped 53.8 per cent, particularly 138.9 per cent to China.
Exports of computers reached a 45-month high of US$1.46 billion, with shipments of semiconductors recording a 33-month high of US$1.82 billion.
The sharp recovery of semiconductor exports was attributed to a rebound in DRAM prices to almost five dollars, coupled with a rapid rise in demand from the U.S., Japan and China.
Exports of wireless telecommunication devices jumped due to Korean handset makers' growing contracts with European countries.
"The export rates of the country's four major export items jumped at the same time in September, unlike in the first half of this year which was beset with labor strikes and low DRAM prices," said Kim Sun-cheol, a section chief of the ministry's export department. |
