Fallowing that logic, we should bomb the world into oblivion because we are all at competition with each other and that implies threat. Preemptive attack is only justifiable when the danger is imminent (as in you and I are embraced in a deadly fight and one of us is reaching for his gun...simply driving towards the gun shop is not reason enough for the cop to shoot the suspect).

He is devoid of ethics. But he was also very predictable. I agree that the moment he'd think he can get away with it he would have tried to pull a fast one. Unfortunately for him, pulling a fast one cannot be done quickly enough for us not to know. We could have monitored him and punished him whenever he'd step over the line but otherwise we'd leave him alone. I am willing to bet such course of action till the day he died would have been a lot cheaper than what the war and occupation is costing us. Not to mention that we really did not have to alienate so many people by going to war in such a rush.

But let's face it. There was a law in US that prevented Bush's cronies to make money in Iraq. In the mean time, the French and Russians were making money in Iraq (albeit nothing like what the WH gang is making now). To make money WH had two choices: roll back the sanctions or take over Iraq. The latter was much more profitable in all respects, including politically. And the money they got to spend (and pocket) comes off our taxes.
