Japan's Economy Shows Signs of Expansion

TOKYO (AP)--Japan's economy showed more signs it is expanding, the government announced Tuesday, with a key economic survey pointing to ongoing growth.

The index of leading economic indicators stood at 55.6 in August, above the boom-or-bust threshold of 50 for the fourth straight month, the Cabinet Office said.

The results echoed the results of a survey releasede last week by the Bank of Japan that said Japanese managers were growing more upbeat about the economy. In that study, optimists outnumbered pessimists among large manufacturers for the first time in nearly three years.

The promising figures follow the government's release of data last month showing gross domestic product grew 1.0 percent in the April-June quarter, an annualized rate of 3.9 percent.

Japan's economy has been mired in a slump since the country's real estate and stock markets collapsed in the early 1990s. Successive economic stimulus packages have failed to put the economy on a solid footing, while declines in prices have made it harder for companies to make profits. Manufacturers have increasingly shifted production to cheaper locations in China and elsewhere in Asia, hurting employment and consumer spending.
