Carl,

US forces have been in the Kurdish sector for 5 months now and not sustained a single casualty from the Kurds. Why is that? Answer - because we are seen as liberators by the Kurds and they know we are not there with imperial ambitions (despite the yellow press).

Why is it different with the Shia's? Well we abandoned them after the Gulf War (to our shame) and its not evident that we are staying the course. Even if Bush says so - they read the same papers we do and know that his father lost after a big military victory.

Now the Sunni middle is a whole other story - these people include the Baath party members - thousands of them. Most of the trouble is in this region and should have been expected, and planned for.

So in many ways your right about a lot of these issues, but cutting and running is no solution. We did that in Somalia and what did that earn us?

John
