AVANT Files Shelf Registration Statement for 15 Million Shares

NEEDHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 2003--AVANT Immunotherapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: AVAN - News) announced today the filing of a shelf registration on Form S-3 with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Once declared effective by the SEC, the shelf registration will allow AVANT to sell from time to time up to 15 million shares of its common stock, warrants to purchase up to 2.25 million shares of common stock, or a combination of these securities. AVANT has no immediate plans to sell any securities under this shelf registration. The filing is designed to give AVANT advance regulatory permission to sell securities in one or more offerings in the future. Terms and price will be determined at the time of an offering.

A registration statement related to the securities listed in the shelf registration has been filed with the SEC but has not yet become effective. These securities may not be sold, nor may offers to buy be accepted, prior to the time the registration statement becomes effective.
