I was not trying to put you down with my post. I thought the paragraph I quoted back to you reflected the kind of conclusions that serious researchers, in my experience, reach.

You have three quotes here but I don't recognize them from the original post this particular exchange started with. Perhaps they were in the stuff that appeared garbled on my screen.

As for the first, the larger reductions and expense, that makes sense to me. But the question is expensive relative to what else. And how important good education is to you. How much are any of us willing to pay for good education? Those that can afford it pay just huge amounts. By the time parents pay private school tuition costs from kindergarten through professional school or graduate school, the costs are astronomical.

Again, I'm not arguing that class size is the only thing that should matter for policy matters. Just that in thinking about what to do to improve the one place in public education that needs it the most, inner city education, I would start there.

I guess I'm not surprised by class size mattering for math achievement. I assume that's easily measured, which certainly helps. And I'm very surprised that it doesn't matter for reading achievement. That's worth looking at the data that produces that conclusion.
