EP, the Japanese economy may be reviving because they have a big new customer, namely China. But every time I go there, which is once or twice a year, I get the strong sense of doldrums. Unemployment is quite high. The population of young people is shrinking etc. Perhaps you are drawn to invest there because the litigation problem is essentially nonexistent there. The idea of justice is not important in Japan. When I use the word in Japanese I always feel that the listener treats it as a Chinese or perhaps English term, some kind of outsider's term. One only rarely reads the word in the newspapers. There are far fewer lawyers in Japan I guess the assumption is that the litigants should settle the matters between themselves.
I've heard of lots of unfair suits in the U.S. It's getting bad in Canada also, though we're still "behind" the US in this respect. It's appalling. But if we attempt to limit legal proceedings in the name of justice, shouldn't there be a right to appeal against "us" in the name of justice? What a problem! Investing is easy compared with that one.
