So, there you have it: conscientious objection may not be limited to traditional religious belief, and can be founded on deep- seated ethical convictions that are functionally similar to deep seated religious beliefs, as an extrapolation of freedom of religion. This, of course, deals with the limited instance of objection to military service, but the principle is the same: any relief that could be sought on religious grounds could be sought on ethical or philosophical grounds, if the convictions involved are considered to be central to the individual, and to occupy a place similar to religious conviction in his life.
